On June 11th, we gathered at the NC General Assembly for our annual advocacy day, HIV Speaks on Jones Street, and what an incredible day it was! This year, we saw nearly 100 passionate advocates register to join us, and thanks to generous donations and support, we were able to provide stipends for 17 individuals to ensure their participation.
The day was filled with empowering discussions, impactful advocacy, and a strong sense of community. One of the highlights was our panel, “Healing Through Faith: Addressing HIV Stigma and Promoting Health Equity.” This exceptional and informative session featured Faith leaders Pastor James Gailliard, Rev. Melissa McQueen-Simmons, and Pastor Jovon McLean, moderated by Rev. Ray McKinnon. Their insights and leadership emphasized the vital role of the Church and Faith leaders, especially in the South, in moving forward the effort to end HIV.
We were also honored to have several special guests give inspiring remarks. Jacquelyn Clymore, HIV/STD/Viral Hepatitis Director at the NC Department of Health & Human Services, shared important updates and reflections. Secretary Kody Kinsley of the NC Department of Health & Human Services spoke passionately about the state’s commitment to health equity and supporting those impacted by HIV. Additionally, Senator Lisa Grafstein of NC District 13, NC State Senate, provided powerful words on the importance of legislative support in our fight against HIV.
The energy and dedication of everyone who attended were palpable. Together, we advocated for our key policy priorities: supporting and continuing to fund the HIV Medication Assistance Program, promoting harm reduction services and preventing overdose deaths, and increasing access to PrEP (Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis) & PEP (Post-Exposure Prophylaxis).
This year’s HIV Speaks on Jones Street was a true testament to the power of community, advocacy, and the collective effort to end HIV. Thank you to all who participated, supported, and made this day a tremendous success. We look forward to continuing this vital work together.
Stay connected and keep advocating!
