Franklin Street Yoga Hosts World AIDS Day Fundraiser 2011

Franklin Street Yoga Center in Chapel Hill earned our gratitude through their tremendous generosity this World AIDS Day, which they designated as a donation class day to benefit NCAAN and raise awareness about HIV/AIDS.
The idea began with David Palmer, a Franklin Street Yoga Center instructor who volunteers with NCAAN. When Palmer approached Franklin Street Yoga Center owner Lori Burgwyn with a request to teach a donation class in honor of World AIDS Day, she proposed that they dedicate the full day to remembering those who have died and those living with HIV/AIDS by offering six donation classes. The event grabbed local media attention, further promoting HIV/AIDS awareness in the surrounding community, and raised over $500 to support NCAAN's work. NCAAN kicked off our Advocacy Workshop tour in Charlotte this October, where Carolinas CARE Partnership hosted our free training for eighteen local people.
"You provided a great presentation that allowed participants to gain a better understanding of the basics of advocacy and how they can begin taking steps that can result in increased awareness of HIV/AIDS needs in our community," said Terry Ellington, the Executive Director of Carolinas CARE Partnership, one of about twenty participants in the event. NCAAN set out to the east in November, conducting advocacy workshops for students at East Carolina University and community members at an event hosted by the Pitt County AIDS Service Organization (PiCASO). Together, these events helped NCAAN to start up a new volunteer program in Greenville just in time for World AIDS Day. Over 150 HIV/AIDS supporters from 32 North Carolina towns showed their support for HIV/AIDS treatment and prevention programs at HIV/AIDS Advocacy Day on Wednesday, April 13th, which included a press conference with legislators and participants at the North Carolina General Assembly Legislative Building.
HIV/AIDS Advocacy Day is an annual event that brings together people living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA) and their loved ones, medical practitioners and service providers, as well as other North Carolinians who share a commitment to protecting HIV/AIDS programs and promoting policies to prevent new HIV infections. | HKonJ Rally 2011 NCAAN volunteer training at Shaw University before the HKonJ rally.
NCAAN volunteers bundled up on February 12th to participate in the NAACP's 5th annual Historic Thousands on Jones St. (HKonJ) March & Rally in downtown Raleigh.
Our team of volunteers marched through downtown Raleigh with nearly 100 fellow HKonJ coalition partners & circulated among the crowd in front of the legislative building on Jones Street, educating rally attendees about the disproportional prevalence of HIV among African Americans and Hispanics in North Carolina. NCAAN's efforts yielded over 300 new Action Team members in just one day -- our largest single-event recruitment result yet! |
